Well technically speaking, I bought a Light Phone III last year after getting back from Europe. It arrived in November. I eagerly anticipated it, since it was a pre-order bulk shipment kind of deal. After using it for a while, I figured I’d share what I think about it.
I use technology all day. Probably too much if I am being honest. When I am done, I try and go analog and disconnect. I don’t need to know everything every waking moment.
Carrying the whole internet in your pocket all the time is not healthy. Plus, it doesn’t feel very human to me and makes staying present hard.
Turns out, I had the Light Phone II a few years back and ended up returning it reluctantly; it lacked reliable directions feature, so I couldn’t depend on it as a primary phone. The Light Phone III feels more solid yet still minimal. And practical enough now with tools like directions.
Funny enough, I still have my smartphone; it has just been put back in its rightful place. Quite literally, it stays on my work table most of the time! And I’ve given it a few specific, contained jobs too: Google Authenticator App for 2FA codes for logging into websites, Stripe, and other systems, plus WhatsApp for overseas friends. And since Roku remotes seem to fail after awhile and I’m not going to keep buying yet another one, the smart phone now does that task too.
I get more focus and time back. I’m more relaxed and all-around happier.
Technology should help you accomplish goals. A tool you drive, not the other way around.
